How long is each driving lesson?

Standard driving lessons are 45 minutes, which is the industry standard for NYC driving schools. This gives enough time for meaningful skill-building each session without overwhelming a new driver. Highway lessons are 60 minutes to allow for longer route practice.

What skills are covered during lessons?

Lessons cover the foundational skills needed to drive safely in New York City: vehicle control, braking and acceleration, steering through tight turns, parallel parking, three-point turns, lane changes, intersection navigation, reading traffic signals and road signs, sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, and defensive driving techniques. As students progress, training shifts toward real-world scenarios like handling double-parked vehicles, reading traffic flow, making quick decisions at busy intersections, and building the spatial awareness city driving demands.

What car is used for lessons?

All lessons are conducted in a dual-control Toyota Corolla. Dual controls mean the instructor has a second brake pedal, which adds a critical layer of safety for new drivers. This is the same vehicle students can use on road test day.

How often should I schedule lessons?

Consistency matters more than cramming. Most students see the best progress with one to two lessons per week, giving them time to absorb each session. Your instructor will recommend a schedule based on your starting level and goals. Lessons are available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends.

In a suburban driving school, a student might practice on wide, low-traffic roads with clear sight lines. In New York City, you are dealing with narrow streets, aggressive drivers, delivery trucks stopped in the lane, cyclists weaving between cars, pedestrians crossing against the signal, and intersections where three directions of traffic converge at once. Super Starz instructors teach students how to read these situations in real time, not just the rules of the road, but the rhythm of how NYC traffic actually moves.

Do students practice on actual NYC streets during lessons?

Yes. Every lesson takes place on real city streets. Brooklyn students train on routes through Bay Ridge, 5th Avenue, 3rd Avenue, and surrounding residential and commercial streets. Staten Island students train around New Dorp, Hylan Boulevard, and mid-island neighborhoods. As students advance, instructors introduce more complex roads, busier intersections, and conditions that mirror what the student will face driving independently.

Do instructors teach the actual DMV road test routes?

Yes. Super Starz instructors know every DMV road test route in Brooklyn and Staten Island, including test sites at Coney Island, Red Hook, Seaview, and the Dugdale Road site on Staten Island. Students practice on the exact roads and maneuvers they will encounter on test day, but the training goes beyond memorizing a route. The goal is to make the student comfortable enough that any route, any intersection, any unexpected situation feels manageable.

I have never driven before. Can I still start lessons?

Absolutely. A large number of Super Starz students are complete beginners who have never been behind the wheel. Instructors start from scratch — how to adjust mirrors, how the pedals work, how to steer — and build from there at whatever pace the student needs. The dual-control vehicle means the instructor can brake at any time, so beginners can focus on learning without fear.

I am a nervous or anxious driver. Will lessons help?

Yes. Instructor patience is not a marketing line at Super Starz. It is the foundation of how lessons work. Nervous drivers are not rushed. Instructors work at the student's comfort level, gradually introducing more challenging situations only when the student is ready. The goal is to replace anxiety with genuine confidence, which only happens when skills are built methodically rather than forced.

Are driving lessons available for adults who never got their license?

Yes. Many Super Starz students are adults in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or older who grew up in NYC relying on public transit and are now learning to drive for the first time. There is no age-related stigma, and instructors are experienced at working with all ages.

Do you offer refresher lessons for licensed drivers?

Yes. Refresher driving lessons are available for licensed drivers who have not driven in years and want to rebuild confidence, recently moved to NYC from a less dense area, received a traffic ticket and want to correct the behavior, or simply want to sharpen their skills. A few refresher lessons can also prevent the bad habits that lead to points on your license and higher insurance premiums.

Why do I need separate highway lessons?

City street driving and highway driving are fundamentally different skills. Merging into 55+ mph traffic on the Belt Parkway, maintaining lane discipline on the BQE while trucks pass on both sides, or crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in wind requires a different kind of confidence than navigating a Brooklyn intersection. Many students who feel comfortable on local streets freeze up on the highway. Dedicated highway lessons build that comfort in a controlled, instructor-guided environment.

What highways and routes are covered?

Highway lessons cover the Belt Parkway, Staten Island Expressway, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, FDR Drive, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and routes to JFK and LaGuardia airports. Instructors choose routes based on the student's needs. Some students need help with basic merging, while others need practice with high-volume multi-lane highways and bridge approaches.

How long are highway driving lessons?

Highway lessons are 60 minutes, longer than the standard 45-minute city lesson. The extra time allows for getting to the highway, completing multiple merges and exits, practicing sustained highway driving, and returning without feeling rushed. Students can also combine up to three sessions back-to-back for extended highway practice.

Are there any toll charges for highway lessons?

Some highway routes involve tolls, such as the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Our vehicles are equipped with E-ZPass, so if a student specifically requests a lesson on a toll route, they are billed at the E-ZPass rate with no markup.

Do I need to take highway lessons before my road test?

Highway driving is not tested on the NYS DMV road test, and we generally recommend taking highway lessons after you pass. New York State learner permit holders are restricted from driving on certain highways, tunnels, and MTA bridges, and operating a vehicle in violation of your license restrictions is a traffic violation. Highway lessons are designed for newly licensed drivers who want to build real confidence at speed before heading out on their own.
