Why Do I Need a Driving School?
A driving school is a DMV-licensed facility where students learn to safely operate a vehicle with licensed instructors. In New York State, schools must be licensed by the NYS DMV, use dual-control vehicles (a second brake pedal on the instructor's side), and offer structured behind-the-wheel training, the mandatory 5-hour pre-licensing course, and road test preparation.

NYC Learner Permit Restrictions
New York City has stricter permit rules than the rest of the state. These restrictions are the main reason most NYC residents need a driving school.
Junior Permit Holders (Daytime, 5 AM–9 PM)
To drive in any of the five boroughs, junior permit holders must:
- Be supervised by a parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, driver ed teacher, or driving school instructor who is 21+ and has a valid license
- Drive a vehicle with dual controls (dual brakes)
- Have only the supervising driver in the front seat
Junior permit practice: NYC requires a dual-control vehicle and an eligible supervising adult who is at least 21 and licensed for that vehicle. Permitted supervisors include a parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, driver education teacher or driving school instructor. Junior permits and junior licenses have different restrictions.

5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course in Brooklyn & Staten Island
New York State requires all first-time road test applicants to complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course (also called the 5-hour class) before they are eligible to schedule their DMV road test. This is not a driving lesson — it is a classroom-based course that covers the essential knowledge every new driver needs before getting behind the wheel unsupervised.

Preparing for Your Road Test
Our instructors assess your progress and help you prepare for the road test. Results depend on your skills, practice and performance on test day.
Here is how the process works: when you purchase a package, we schedule your road test appointment with the DMV as soon as you complete your 5-hour pre-licensing course, and we book all of your driving lessons upfront, working around your schedule — not ours. However, if by the final lessons of your package your instructor feels you are not fully ready, we will tell you straight up. We will not let you walk into the DMV and fail a test you could have passed with a little more preparation.
This matters more than most students realize. DMV road tests in New York are only conducted Monday through Friday. That means you are likely taking time off from work or school to go. If you fail, you lose that day's wages or miss class — and then you have to do it all over again for a second attempt. The cost of failing is not just the rebooking fee; it is the lost income, the wasted time, and the frustration of repeating the process. We do not want our students spending unnecessary money or burning through their limited time off on a test they were not prepared for.
If additional lessons fit your budget, that is the best path forward. If you are over 18 and have a family member or friend who is 21 or older with a valid license, we may recommend that they supplement your practice hours between lessons — this can help you progress faster without additional lesson costs. However, it is important to know that permit holders under 18 years of age are not permitted to practice driving in New York City unless the vehicle is equipped with a dual-brake system (an auxiliary brake pedal on the passenger side). This means teen drivers under 18 in NYC can only legally practice in a professionally equipped driving school car with a certified instructor — not in a family vehicle. Our Toyota Corollas are equipped with dual controls specifically for this purpose.
